Dashboard Warning Lights Explained

Dashboard lights are your car's way of talking to you — but only if you know what they're saying. Some mean "book a service soon," others mean "pull over now." Here's a quick guide from our diagnostics team in Dartmouth.

Check engine light

The most misunderstood light on the dash. A steady glow usually means something needs looking at — it could be as minor as a loose gas cap or as serious as a misfire. A flashing check engine light means stop soon; you risk damaging the catalytic converter. Either way, a diagnostic scan tells you exactly what's wrong.

Oil pressure light

If the oil light comes on while driving, pull over safely and shut the engine off. Low oil pressure can destroy an engine in minutes. Check your oil level and don't drive until you know it's safe.

Battery / charging light

This means your charging system isn't keeping up — often a failing alternator or battery. You may have limited time before the car stalls, so get it checked promptly rather than risking a no-start.

Brake warning light

ABS light

Your regular brakes still work, but the anti-lock system is disabled — which matters most on wet or icy roads. Worth diagnosing before winter.

Temperature warning

An overheating engine is a stop-driving situation. Pull over, let it cool, and don't open the radiator cap while hot.
