How to Store Your Off-Season Tires the Right Way

Good tires are an investment, and how you store the off-season set makes a real difference in how long they last. Whether you keep your summer tires over winter or your winter set over summer, here's how to do it right.

Clean them first

Wash off brake dust, road salt, and grime before storing. Salt left on tires over the off-season can degrade the rubber. Let them dry completely.

Keep them cool, dry, and dark

• Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight

• Avoid heat sources and anything that produces ozone, like electric motors

• A basement or climate-controlled space beats a hot shed or garage attic

• Keep them off damp concrete floors if you can

Position matters

Tires mounted on rims are best stored stacked flat or hung. Unmounted tires should be stored standing upright to avoid distortion. Airtight tire bags help keep out moisture and oils.
