Winter Windshield Prep: Wipers, Washer Fluid, and Defrost

Winter driving in Nova Scotia means short days, salt spray, and sudden squalls. If you can't see clearly, nothing else about your car matters. Here's how to get your windshield and wipers ready.

Switch to winter washer fluid

Summer washer fluid can freeze on the glass — and in the reservoir. Swap in a winter formula rated to at least −40°C so you can clear salt film and slush without it icing over. Keep a spare jug in the trunk.

Replace worn wiper blades

Wiper blades take a beating and usually need replacing every 6–12 months. Streaking, skipping, or chattering means it's time. Consider winter blades, which resist ice buildup on the frame.

Know your defrost settings

• Use the front defrost with A/C on — it removes moisture faster (yes, even in winter)

• Point vents at the windshield and side windows

• Crack a window slightly to cut interior humidity

• Never pour hot water on a frozen windshield — it can crack the glass

Clear the whole car

Brush off the roof, hood, lights, and all windows before you drive — not just a porthole on the windshield. Snow flying off your roof is a hazard to you and everyone behind you.
